    2002 Bourgeois D-150 Brazilian

This is simply the best D-150 currently available with a quality level of Brazilian Rosewood that is almost impossible to find today. It is quarter-sawn and has beautiful figuring with great depth and shimmer. The master grade Adirondack Spruce top is also one of the best we've seen or heard in a long time and has nice tight grain. The sound of this guitar is over the top good with balance, volume, richness, and detail and it is great for flatpicking and fingerpicking. This one owner D-150 has received regular care from Dana Bourgeois and is in excellent condition. It has some very light buckle indentations on the back that do not detract from the appearance as well as some light capo marks on the neck that don't affect the feel of the neck and could be buffed if desired by the new owner. This is one of the good ones. It comes with its original hard shell case.

  • Ricky Skaggs' Bourgeois Brazilian D-150
    Sold

    Ricky Skaggs' Bourgeois Brazilian D-150

The bottom line: #651! Brazilian Rosewood, Adirondack Spruce, a great neck up and down, solid tone and lots of volume! This is the first guitar that Dana Bourgeois built for Ricky Skaggs back in 1996. We brought the guitar to the Bourgeois shop in Lewiston, Maine to let Dana have a look at it again after 25 years. He recalled that Bryan Sutton, who was already playing a Banjo Killer, introduced Dana and Ricky at the Point Thomas Bluegrass festival in 1996 and that he built a guitar for both Bryan and Ricky. We looked at Dana’s records and found #651 in a log book with Ricky’s name on it. Dana is pretty sure that this was Ricky’s personal road guitar from 1996 to 2002. We’ll include a copy of the log page with the guitar. As Dana noted when he picked it up for the first time in 25 years, it plays great, easy up and down the neck and has had new frets installed. The tone is even and balanced and this guitar is capable of playing loud and responding to energetic playing like you would expect from Ricky Skaggs’s show guitar. We carefully examined the guitar at the Bourgeois shop and made these notes on it. The pick guard is original and the wear on the top was earned honestly playing Bluegrass music. The guitar is road-worn but was well maintained so that it is solid and sounds great. There is a small repaired crack on the back. We presume that there has been a neck re-set and the bridge was thinned to a height to allow for a tall full saddle with lots of room to shave in the future. The original neck profile was thinned (see photos). That and the 1 3/4" nut makes the neck feel contemporary and easy to play. The guitar is gig ready with a Fishman VT system installed and comes with a hard shell case.

Brazilian Rosewood is considered by many to be the ultimate guitar tone wood. We currently have an excellent selection of beautiful Brazilian Rosewood guitars from Bourgeois guitars and Santa Cruz guitars. Brazilian has an amazing tonal reflectivity and clarity and balance across the frequency spectrum. It is highly resonant giving guitars what we call bone tone. Sometimes described as a high velocity of sound, Brazilian Rosewood is responsive and complements all top woods perfectly. Many people claim that other woods are similar, but none compare in the excellent quality of this wood for guitar building. Brazilian Rosewood has been banned from import since the 1990s and the stock of wood that is available in the USA to build with has been dwindling for years. This rarity contributes to its value especially because it is so highly sought after for the finest instruments.
