Used 1944 Gibson J-45 Banner
Now this is a true piece of American history, a collectors dream but also an astounding sounding instrument. This 1944 J-45 Banner is an amazing example of war-time guitar building. Spruce was in short supply at that time due to the war effort so Gibson was building guitars with whatever they had available. At this time, they had Mahogany and on this guitar, it happens to be a single piece, yes that is right, one piece of solid mahogany on the top! The tree this came from must have been huge. And this is no ordinary Mahogany, this has beautiful figured bearclaw mahogany on the top. This guitar originally had a sunburst and at some point someone carefully stripped the guitar and re-finished it to fully feature the mahogany on this guitar. They were smart to keep the headstock finish along to keep the banner logo in tact. The neck on this guitar is quite chunky and gives you a great deal to hold on to. The sound is absolutely angelic. Warm, rich, subdued. Dry yet rich and tonally complex. Sweet, round and growls when you want it to but lovely and deep when picked lightly. You can feel the history of this guitar come forth when you play it. It has opened up and aged wonderfully over the years, lending that mature crispness of aged wood with a sublime musicality of a well loved guitar. This guitar plays nicely, but to play any nicer it could use a neck reset and has been priced with this in mind. Comes with a Gibson hard shell case.
